Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics works everyday to take care of patients, conduct research to find better treatments for childhood diseases, and teach medical students and residents about the joy of helping children and their families.
Faculty members participate in research, education and patient care programs through the Steele Children’s Research Center with the goal of improving the health of all children. Major areas of research include asthma, cardiology, cardiopulmonary support, growth hormone disorders and therapy, neonatal respiratory critical care, new therapies for childhood cancer and hemophilia, the pathogenesis and treatment of asthma and cystic fibrosis, pediatric oncology, psychological reaction to physical illness, toxicology, and viral disease diagnosis and treatment.
The department offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic, consultative and therapeutic services. The department provides interdisciplinary clinical services for cardiology, dermatology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary diseases, rheumatology, gastroenterology, nutrition, developmental biology, general pediatrics, infectious diseases and endocrinology.
As part of Arizona's only medical school, the Department of Pediatrics conducts more than 120 outreach clinics in 20 rural and tribal communities. In addition, the UA pediatric faculty annually provides statewide specialized pediatric care to more than 14,000 children with chronic medical problems and serves as the largest health care provider in Southern Arizona for lower socioeconomic children.
For over 30 years, the UA Department of Pediatrics has been the sole staff providing care at Kino Community Hospital's pediatric out-patient clinics. Other community involvements include medical and consultative services to the Job Corps program, the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind, the Tucson Unified School District and the Pima County Juvenile Court.
