Radiology

The Department of Radiology’s mission is to provide clinical service, teaching of medical students and residents, and research. Research is an integral component of the department and essential in improving and strengthening our educational and clinical efforts. Our department is actively involved in basic science, clinical and technology development research for the application of medical imaging.

Major areas of research in our department include radiological physics, acquisition, display and storage of high resolution digital images, single photon emission computed tomography, monoclonal antibody imaging, and metabolic bone disease. The Digital Imaging Group has active investigations in diagnostic roentgenology, and is predominately centered on an innovative medical imaging laboratory and a biologic magnetic resonance facility. Our faculty are largely supported by federal and corporate grants in the field of digital imaging (UA is 12th overall in NIH funding and 6th among public universities).

Our Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training Program has a tradition of excellence and provides one of the finest clinical teaching and training environments. Our residency program is a clinically oriented, academic experience providing the foundation for subsequent careers in Diagnostic Radiology, both in academic and private practice sectors. The program is integrated, utilizing the facilities of the Arizona Health Sciences Center, University Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center , and the Tucson Breast Center , a private practice, full-service mammography center. Residents are introduced to our Outreach Program, which enables our faculty to serve rural clinics and small hospitals in remote locations of our state using Teleradiology. This outreach service is a critical contribution to the Arizona Telemedicine Program and a clear example of how the department services the needs of Arizona residents.

The Department of Radiology offers imaging services including conventional radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound, radionuclide imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging. The department also provides therapeutic radiological interventions including angioplasty, aspiration and biopsy, biliary and urinary tract decompression procedures, and percutaneous radiologic intervention. Department faculty have special expertise in cardiovascular, thoracic, vascular, and genitourinary radiology as well as tumor imaging, mammography, myelography, and functional brain imaging.
