Speaker: Lana Hirai Gimber, MD, MPH

Title: Functional MR Imaging in MSK Tumors 

The Department of Medical Imaging is pleased to have Lana Hirai Gimber, MD, MPH presenting at our Grand Rounds on Wednesday, September 13th, at 12:00 pm in the College of Medicine, Room 2117.

Dr. Gimber is an assistant professor of radiology and musculoskeletal imaging at Banner – University Medical Center. Her area of clinical interest and research includes MSK tumor and peripheral nerve imaging. 

Dr. Gimber received her Masters of Public Health at Drexel University School of Public Health.  She attended medical school at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and Internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (Dignity Health) in Phoenix, AZ.  She completed Diagnostic Radiology Residency and fellowship in the subspecialty of Musculoskeletal Imaging at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.  

Dr. Gimber is the recipient of the 2017 University of Arizona Cancer Center Better Than Ever award grant for her research entitled “Evaluating the role of diffusion tensor imaging in predicting development of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy in patients with breast cancer”.  Additional awards include the RSNA Honored Educator Award and RSNA Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award.

Abstract:  Musculoskeletal (MSK) tumors are a heterogeneous group of bone and soft tissue neoplasms which require complex, multi-disciplinary treatment strategies to achieve optimal local control and avoid metastatic spread.  Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays a key role in detecting and characterizing the tumor, determining tumor extent, treatment planning, and post operative and post treatment surveillance.

Conventional MR imaging offers information complementary to radiography that may allow confident diagnosis of benign tumors and is invaluable in surgical planning.  Functional MR imaging can add information at a cellular level and lead to more accurate diagnosis, sensitive imaging endpoints to monitor efficacy, and appropriate treatment planning.  This presentation will discuss the MR imaging protocol for MSK tumors, with emphasis on functional imaging techniques such as diffusion weighted imaging, dynamic contrast enhancement, and chemical shift imaging.
