VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Becoming a volunteer for the College of Medicine is a selfless way to give back to the college and a way to reconnect with fellow alumni as well as students and faculty. It is also a way to make a positive difference for the College of Medicine.

Volunteer activities within the structure provide an excellent vehicle if you are interested in developing your leadership skills. However, the most important benefit will be the wonderful feeling of sharing with the college family some of the skills derived from the College of Medicine experience. It is this desire to give time and energy that defines a volunteer.

Ways to volunteer:
1. College of Medicine Alumni Board
2. Class Agent
3. Reunion Committee
4. Interviewer
5. Mentor

1) College of Medicine Alumni Board
The purpose of the Alumni Board is to increase the positive visibility of the UA College of Medicine and support its success. Members are Ambassadors of the College, serve in an advisory capacity, act as liaisons, provide feedback, and facilitate the College strategic plan when possible.

Structure

The Alumni Board is made of representative from each of the following categories:
• College of Medicine Alumni from each decade
• Current Students from Tucson & Phoenix Campuses
• Faculty and Staff from Tucson & Phoenix campuses
• Dean, College of Medicine – Tucson
• Dean, College of Medicine – Phoenix

Volunteer Expectations:
4 meetings per year: 2 in person alternating between Tucson and Phoenix, 2 in an electronic meeting format (phone, video conference, WebEx)

2) Class Agent Program
Class agents serve a vital role to the College of Medicine. They are social networkers by staying connected to classmates and encouraging participation in every way.

Class Agent Responsibilities:
• Act as a social networking agent and general liaison between the College and your classmates.
• Send updates or changes for your classmates when you receive them. This includes addresses, e-mail, telephone numbers, and occupational information.
• Encourage classmates to send news for the Class Notes section of the College of Medicine Update.
• Recruit members to serve on a reunion committee every 5 years.

Volunteer Expectations:
Classes can have one or more agents. In classes with multiple agents, responsibilities can be shared and the workload spread among a number of agents.

3) Reunion Committee
Reunions are many things to many people. For some, a time to return to their first home away from home; for others, a renewal of old friendships or a continuation of life-long associations; some return to salute the institution that made it all happen, but all come to reconnect and renew their common bond with the UA.

Each year, the College of Medicine invites back the graduates from the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, and 40th year classes. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a weekend during the fall reconnecting with classmates as the UA and College of Medicine roll out the red carpet to celebrate the class reunions of our alumni. Reunion Weekend is packed full of fun activities and events including a reception and dinner, educational seminars, the homecoming parade, picnic and football game, class parties and much, much more!

Volunteer Expectations
Reunion committees are formed once every 5 years and typically begin making plans and communicating with classmates about 12 months before their reunion event.

4) Interviewer
Assist the COM Admissions office with interviewing prospective students during the interview season (September – January).

Volunteer Expectations
In the very near future, the Admissions Office will be offering “interview days” in centralized locations. This will give alumni the opportunity to interview a number of prospective students all on one day. More information to come!!!

5) Mentor (work in progress - more information to come!)
