Biomedical Imaging Task Force

The potential for "pushing the envelope" on biomedical imaging at the University of Arizona is unmatched. To reach that potential, however, a comprehensive effort is in needed involving interdepartmental and inter-institutional faculty. To accomplish this goal, it would be my hope that a planning committee could present to the Dean a consensus proposal or at least a minimum number of alternative options as an operational framework for this project.

Participating faculty should be made aware of the needs and opportunities for research by all of the existing working groups. Therefore I would hope that the planning committee could evaluate options including the following:

  • Should the organization be centered in an existing or newly created department?
  • Should the organization have the form of a Center of Excellence ?
  • Should the organization be a loose confederation of working groups with a small steering committee coordinating interdisciplinary efforts, research planning, and applications for grant support?
  • How should this initiative be interdigitated with the search for the new Head of Radiology?
  • How do we do this on a statewide level, and in particular in conjunction with Phoenix ?

The planning committee should consider how inclusive the biomedical imaging project should be, at least initially. That is, should it be aimed primarily at diagnostic and prognostic imaging with direct application to translational research? Or should it include imaging in a context not directly associated with medical practice?
