Cardiovascular Research Working Group

As you presumably know, cardiovascular disease has been added as a fourth priority area for the College of Medicine’s research expansion. The other three areas are Cancer, Diabetes, and Human Neurological Sciences, and working groups have been in place for some time to generate plans for growth in those areas.

Among the activities which I would your working group to address are the following:

  1. Identification of investigators currently at the University of Arizona who have an investigative program in cardiovascular diseases. Please include faculty both within and outside of the College of Medicine. While the obvious starting point is the Sarver Heart Center, please take this opportunity to widen the net as much as possible.

  2. Identification of a discreet number of sub-themes of cardiovascular research in which we should place our focus. Prioritization of those sub-themes, or at least characterization of those most appropriate for expansion would be welcome, as would identification of the individual/s who are leaders in those areas.

  3. Identification of interfaces between cardiovascular research and enabling technologies which are prioritized for growth—biomedical engineering, biomedical imaging, and telemedicine.

  4. As part of the Space Master Plan for the College of Medicine (to be released within the next 1-2 weeks), incremental space has been designated within the Medical Research Building (one floor) for cardiovascular research. Additional space for CV research has also been identified in existing buildings. Working in conjunction with the Deans Research Council Space Committee, I would like your working group to suggest a process for occupying that space.

  5. Identification of synergies between existing focus areas in the Sarver Heart Center, the UMC emphasis in heart disease, our current clinical efforts in CVD and proposed new research efforts.

  6. Provide an overview of how the research efforts on the Tucson campus should complement and interface with current or proposed research efforts in Phoenix.
