Pathways to Success...
Exploring Health Careers for High School Students
In 2017, an IM resident proposed the program, Pathways to Success, as an opportunity to engage and “give back” to the community we serve. What began as an annual project quickly evolved into a biannual event. Twice a year, 80-100 high school students from underserved Tucson and other Southern Arizona communities are invited to Banner University Medical Center South (BUMCS), exposed to a variety of medical professions and led on a hospital tour. Many career paths are represented including, but not limited to, Physicians (multiple specialties), Nursing, Therapies (Respiratory, Physical, Speech, Occupational), Dietician, Medical Assistants, Phlebotomy and Pharmacy. Activities include hands-on demonstrations as well as discussions related to the fields listed above. All medical participants volunteer their time to engage these young students. In addition, the event offers two (2) $500 educational awards via a competitive essay submission.
