“The Effects of Diabetes Self-Management Education Among American Indian Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Identified in the Emergency Department”

Wednesday, June 12, 2019
2 p.m.
College of Nursing, Room 470

About the Candidate:
Dr. Timian M. Godfrey earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Southern Utah University, her master’s degree from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and is a May 2019 graduate from the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing Executive Doctor of Nursing (DNP) program. She has practiced as a board-certified family nurse practitioner for the past five years in the fields of pain management, orthopedic surgery and, most recently, emergency medicine.

Dr. Godfrey’s doctoral work focused on applying culturally fit diabetes self-management education (DSME) and improving throughput processes for American Indian adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus management in a critical access hospital. Her quality improvement project evaluated the effect of a culturally adapted diabetes DSME on associated factors of glycemic control among American Indian adults with T2DM who were identified in a rural emergency department (ED). This pilot study found that beyond immediate control of hyperglycemia during an ED visit, enrollment into this DSME program prior to discharge improved self-care behaviors associated with glycemic control and serum A1C measurements.
