Learning to Lead Faculty Leadership Program

Learning to Lead is a nine-month-long program designed to foster the development of the next generation of leaders in academic medicine. Associate professors and other faculty in mid-level leadership roles are considered for candidacy in the leadership program.

The program prepares participants to effectively lead a section, center, clinic, or lab at the College of Medicine – Tucson. Participants learn from topic experts and mentors, as well as from each other, as they develop new knowledge, skills, support networks and reflective abilities. In order to maximize group interaction, only 10-15 participants are selected for each cohort.

Sessions, with breakfast provided, are held monthly. See the schedules for the current Learning to Lead cohort.

Program Goals

At the completion of the program, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize and effectively utilize their personal leadership style
  • Manage resources including money, time, and people
  • Communicate and resolve conflicts
  • Succeed as a leader in the complex environment of academic medicine

Participant Selection Criteria

  1. Mid-career faculty members with a current or near-future leadership position. Preference is given to Associate Professors but others may apply.
  2. Clear commitment to the organization (College of Medicine/Banner Health).
  3. Strength of personal statement in defining why the applicant should be selected.
  4. Commitment to full participation in the entire course, including attendance at all sessions and completion of all reading/homework assignments.
  5. Letter of nomination from Department Chair, Dean, or Center Director stating a commitment to the applicant’s career and support, including protected time, for the applicant to attend the entire course. Nomination letters should be addressed to Patricia Markel, Director, Learning to Lead, and uploaded as a PDF or Word document as part of the application process.
  6. All components of the electronic application completed prior to the deadline.
