Nationally Recognized Pediatrician, UA Alum to Keynote 2018 White Coat Ceremony

Monday, July 16, 2018

Pediatrician, journalist, entrepreneur and television producer Alok Patel, MD, will return to his alma mater to keynote the ceremony.

Alok Patel, MD, a member of the College of Medicine – Tucson’s Class of 2012, will deliver the keynote address at the 2018 White Coat Ceremony.

Dr. Patel is a nationally-recognized pediatrician who completed his pediatric residency at Seattle Children's Hospital. The UA alumnus is currently based in New York City and serves at Columbia University New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Dedicated to improving the communication of health to the masses, he has contributed to ABC, CNN and Medscape as a medical expert and producer.

Irving L. Kron, MD, interim executive dean of the College of Medicine – Tucson and associate senior vice president for the UA Health Sciences, believes the Class of 2022 will connect with Dr. Patel’s speech.

“Dr. Patel’s medical journey started right here at the College of Medicine – Tucson. I believe our students will not only relate to Dr. Patel, but also be inspired by him and his contributions to medicine,” Dr. Kron explained. “Our faculty and staff look forward to welcoming him back to Tucson and hearing his address.”

Dr. Patel credits the multi-faceted, quality medical education at the University of Arizona for helping shape his early career. He also draws on his experience as a grievance counselor and improv comedian to connect with patients. The art of the human interaction underlies all medicine, he says.

At the College of Medicine – Tucson, Dr. Patel served as student body president and class representative. He kept busy after graduation.

Dr. Patel joined the founding team of the digital health start-up Medumo — an award-winning platform that navigates patients through surgeries or procedures. He is currently helping to develop a national protocol to help clinicians identify victims of sex trafficking as a founding member of The America Unchained Project.

An advocate, Dr. Patel has shared his views about vaccinations, health care access, childhood malnutrition and human trafficking.

The 2018 White Coat Ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. AZ Friday, July 27 in Centennial Hall, located at 1020 E. University Blvd. The event will be livestreamed at Facebook.com/UACOMTucson.
