Endocrinology Grand Rounds returns with local, national diabetes & metabolism experts
Former division chief and Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism director Larry Mandarino, PhD, kicks off in-person seminar series on Sept. 8, with alternating local and national speakers twice monthly this fall.
A new lecture series joins the Department of Medicine lineup of opportunities to discuss academic medicine, research and patient care improvements, this one from the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson.
Ronadip Banerjee,
MD, PhD
“Our division’s Grand Rounds series has had a few years hiatus,” said Ronadip Banerjee, MD, PhD, who took over as Endocrinology division chief in January coming from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. “We’re excited to ‘reboot’ this series, featuring one ‘internal’ and one nationally recognized speaker each month. Topics will cross both basic science and clinical topics in endocrinology and diabetes. This fall’s speakers include experts in genetics of diabetes, thyroid disease, pancreatic islet biology, maternal health in pregnancy and postpartum, and pituitary disorders. We welcome everyone who’s interested in Endocrinology to attend!”
Dr. Banerjee noted seminar series are critical for disseminating new knowledge before official publication as well as building collaborations and networks between investigators at the institution or more broadly with others regionally and nationally.
The first Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Grand Rounds will be hosted Sept. 8, 4-5 p.m., in person in the 4150A Conference Room on the top floor of the University of Arizona Health Sciences Library, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., Tucson.
Lawrence “Larry” J. Mandarino, MD
Speaking will be Lawrence “Larry” J. Mandarino, PhD, a former Endocinology division chief and director of the UAHS Center for Disparities in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism and the T32 Diabetes Research Training Program in the Department of Medicine.
His topic is: “What Does Thermodynamics Tell Us About Insulin Resistance?”
The lectures, all at same time and place, will be held twice monthly this fall and are in-person only.
“I'm particularly excited,” Dr. Banerjee added, “that the Departmental Incentive Fund (from DOM and Banner) allows the division to bring nationally known speakers to visit in person. While video meetings serve a purpose, they at times don’t satisfy either the speaker or audience in the same way that in-person interactions do. I call them the ‘microwave/TV dinner’ versions of interacting — adequate, but not the same as a real meal.”
Other upcoming speakers include:
- Sept. 22 | Leslie Baier, PhD, acting chief, Phoenix Epidemiology & Clinical Research Branch, and section chief, Diabetes Molecular Genetics Section, NIH National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases;
