Deepa Khushlani, MD

Assistant Professor, Psychiatry

Dr. Deepa Khushlani has been involved in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry for more than 30 years. She has extensive experience with residential treatment, school consultation, emergency psychiatric services, consultations and outpatient treatment of children and adolescents. She believes in a comprehensive multimodal approach to treatment and strives to provide developmentally appropriate evidence-based assessment and treatment. She offers an integrated approach in addressing mental and physical health difficulties by addressing family, educational, cultural, and complex social as well as interpersonal issues. Professionally she has assumed leadership roles as medical director, enjoyed teaching medical students, residents, fellows, and working with multidisciplinary teams to address prevention and treatment of psychiatric illness.

She attended Osmania medical college in Hyderabad, India. After immigrating to the United States she completed a residency training in general psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia and completed a fellowship and child and adolescent psychiatry at children's national medical center in Washington DC. She has gained her board certifications in general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. She hopes to put her clinical skills to help children and families and also teach medical students, residents and fellows. Her treatment philosophy of taking the lead from children and families by being creative, actively and honestly communicating with them, as well as her passion to make a difference makes for effective treatment.

She has provided care for children and families on a non-discriminatory bases always considering the perspective of the patient, family and community supports. She believes in empowering families and teaching them empathy, validation and mutuality when dealing with their children.

Currently, with Banner Dr. Khushlani will be working in an outpatient clinic setting. She has the clinical experience to address the unique challenges to offer hope and healing to children and adolescents with special needs. Her commitment to children and families for long-term results will help ensure that children become more resilient and use positive coping skills in difficult times.

She is looking forward to making contributions to the Banner and Tucson community and believes in honest communication, collaborative treatment and education to effect change beyond cultural and economic lines.
