Community Service Distinction Track

Preclerkship Phase
Completion of Commitment to Underserved People I (CUP I) with 2 credits:

• 90 hours of volunteer time completed by February 28 before Transition to Clerkship course
• Hold a leadership position in one of the CUP clinical or non-clinical programs
• Submit a three-page reflective paper on CUP I experiences by February 1 of the year entering Clerkship Phase

Clerkship and Transition to Residency Phases
Completion of Commitment to Underserved People II (CUP II) with 2 credits:

• 90 hours of volunteer time completed by February 28 of graduation year
• By December 1, submit 880C form with a detailed description of capstone project topic for approval before enrollment in CUP II for 2 clinical credits and CSDT Capstone for 2 non-clinical credits
• Complete a community service capstone project due by February 1 of graduation year. This project will fall into one of the following categories:
  • Research paper: This should be a 10-page cited paper addressing a topic relevant to care for underserved populations. Students may choose to add information in the discussion section reflecting on their personal experiences in the CUP program and how they will affect their future interactions as physicians and what these experiences have provided them in terms of insight and learning.
  • Advocacy article or narrative medicine composition: Students will focus on a particular issue or patient experience that they use to write this piece, using their roles as future medical leaders to advocate for patient needs. This should be a high-level article that is publishable quality; students should plan to submit for publication.
  • Longitudinal QI project: These projects will be designed in conjunction with and approved by CUP director with mentorship throughout the transition to clerkship year. Students will complete a write-up of the data and outcomes of these projects for their capstone.
• Presentation of capstone project at the end of year CUP Symposium in April. University policy does not allow accrual of any credit from the Preclerkship Phase to be counted toward credit in the Clerkship and Transition to Residency Phases.
