The MPH course work has been developed specifically for medical students to complement their medical studies. The first two years consist of core public health courses integrated with the medical school curriculum. Students generally enroll in one public health course each semester. Online MPH courses offer an alternative opportunity for some classes/semesters.
The third year is comprised of remaining core courses, public health electives, and clinical leadership development. This year culminates with a field internship experience. Fourth and fifth years follow a traditional medical school clinical education course of study.
Core Courses
The MD courses follow the medical curriculum. The MPH core courses consist of:
- Issues and Trends in Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Biostatistics
- Health Policy and Management
- Social and Behavioral Sciences
- Environmental and Occupational Health
Electives
A wide range of electives is available. Each combines clinical learning with acquisition of relevant public health skills. Independent studies may be taken in health research, community assessment, health informatics, program development, and health administration and leadership.
Internship
An internship is a required experience planned by the student, advisor, and internship sponsor. Experiences may include health planning, policy analysis, health research, community health assessment, or program development. Emphasis is placed on mastering public health skills in problem solving and program development, implementatin and evaluation. Students continue to participate in clinical services during the internship period, which includes a full semester of the MPH year.
