Medical Education Program
With more than 80 residents and fellows and more than 55 faculty members, the Department of Emergency Medicine has cultivated a truly exceptional learning environment.
EMD 845 - Emergency Medicine/Critical Care
All fourth-year College of Medicine – Tucson medical students are required to take this clerkship rotation, using Oasis to register.
Students gain rigorous patient care experience in the emergency department and the intensive care unit, obtaining an overview of the fundamental principles and concepts of emergency medicine, focusing on common presenting complaints and procedures in undifferentiated patients. They observe how treatment in the emergency department influences the patient’s subsequent hospitalization, and will learn critical care concepts such as ventilation management, hemodynamic monitoring, pressor management and critical care pharmacology.
Attendance is required for the first day’s orientation, sim lab, splinting lab and ultrasound lab. A total of 14 clinical shifts will be required, in addition to attendance at a minimum of two the department’s teaching conferences. Students must complete reading assignments and online didactics, finish Aquifer cases, and login for mid-clerkship evaluation and the final exam (on the final Friday of the rotation). The shift schedule during the rest of the month is flexible and will be developed by the course coordinator at least two weeks before the rotation begins.

Visiting students who are selected for an enrolled elective will be offered the opportunity to interview with faculty for any of the three emergency medicine residency programs:
Students who do not interview during the rotation will not be guaranteed a formal interview during the season.
FAQs
At this time, three electives accept out-of-state students:
No, we only accept students from LCME-accredited schools.
No. The first two days of orientation as well as all clinical shifts are mandatory. With limited space in the emergency department, it is impossible to make special schedule accommodations.
You will be working at both Banner – University Campus and Banner – South Campus and will need to commute to both locations. Public transportation is available but may be challenging for a night shift.
Our department hosts two categorical emergency medicine residency programs and one combined EM/pediatrics program. Each program has a slightly different interview process. You can interview for any or all of the programs while on your emergency medicine rotation. You must apply through ERAS and interview for each program you wish to be considered for. Please note that each program has its own NRMP identification number that you must select in ERAS and, eventually, in your rank list.
There will be two days allotted to those who wish to interview while rotating here. Students will be made aware of these dates during orientation. If you have any questions, please email Sonya Martyna-Seaman.
Students wanting research experience can begin the process by completing online HIPAA and CITI training. Fourth-year medical students who would like to do research for credit can enroll in EMD 800A through Oasis.
