Jordan Mitchell, DO
Where are you from? Santa Cruz, California.
Why did you choose the College of Medicine – Tucson Pediatrics Residency Program? I chose U of A for my pediatrics residency because it seemed to have everything I was looking for to help me become the competent and caring pediatrician I aspire to be. I enjoyed the resident-run aspect of the program, as I felt it would push me to be my best and provide the most opportunities to learn actively. However, they also had the best wellness program of all the interviews I had, and seemed authentically concerned about their residents. I knew I wanted to be at a dedicated pediatric hospital/center with most or all of the specialties and high-level trauma care but not in a very large city. Finally, somewhere with a sunny climate and fun things to do around town when I would have free time.
What are your current professional interests and career goals? I am currently planning to pursue a career in general pediatrics. I enjoy knowing a little bit about everything in my personal life and enjoy knowing a lot about many fields of medicine required to be an outpatient pediatrician. Beyond my future as a provider, I would like to become involved in medical education or health policy, which are two of my professional passions.
What are your personal interests and hobbies? I took on a challenge during college to be as interesting as possible and therefore have developed many different interests. I grew up playing soccer before finding my way to Korean martial arts for many years. I found myself enjoying both cooking and gardening, so have continued to refine and nurture those talents. I enjoy music, having learned to play the piano and guitar as well as to swing dance despite having very poor rhythm.
What is your favorite thing about Tucson? So far, my favorite thing about Tucson would be either how nice everyone has been or how surprisingly green the city is.
What are your non-medical goals during residency? My primary personal goal during residency is to buy a house and create a home. After such a long journey to become a physician, I am ready to feel settled and comfortable with where I live. Beyond that, I am ready to fulfill my personal challenge and am on the lookout for my next hobby.
