The late Geoffrey Ahern, MD, PhD, was a well-known and highly regarded expert in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. As an educator, he was highly involved in the education of medical students, residents and fellows, and as a clinician, he was loved by his patients and their families for helping them negotiate a terrible diagnosis with grace and humor. He is missed, and his legacy will continue to grow at the University of Arizona and in the programs he helped build.
Dr. Geoffrey Ahern was board certified in neurology, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; behavioral neurology & neuropsychiatry, United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. He was a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Neurological Association, Behavioral Neurology Society, and International Neuropsychological Association. Dr. Ahern directed the Behavioral Neuroscience and Alzheimer's Clinic at the University of Arizona since his arrival in 1990 until his death in 2022. He held the Bruce and Lorraine Cumming Endowed Chair in Alzheimer's Research and was a professor of neurology, psychiatry, psychology and the Evelyn F. McKnight Brain Institute. Over more than three decades, Dr. Ahern participated in some 40 clinical trials of agents to treat and/or diagnose Alzheimer's disease. He served as the director of the University of Arizona Clinical Core, which is part of the multi-site Arizona Alzheimer's Disease Core Center (ADCC), funded by the NIA.
