Shamar Young, MD

Professor, Medical Imaging
Division Chief, Interventional Radiology

With a passion for minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Young expertly performs thermal ablation (microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation), radioembolization (transarterial radioembolization (TARE), selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) with yttrium 90, and transarterial chemoembolization. Dr. Young pioneers some of these same techniques to provide relief for patients with cancer related pain. His combined expertise provides the opportunity for patients to receive cancer treatments on an outpatient basis.

Dr. Young is also an expert in the treatment of portal hypertension using techniques including transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) and portal vein recanalization. Additionally, Dr. Young treats patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) through a minimally invasive technique known as prostate artery embolization.

Dr. Young is passionate about clinical translation and research. He currently serves as principal investigator and co-principal investigator clinical studies involving procedures and therapies aimed at improving patient care and outcomes. Dr. Young has published more than 75 papers, the majority of which are as first author. Recent publications address the treatment of primary and secondary cancers of the liver, treatment of portal hypertension and prostate artery embolization.

An active committee member for many professional societies, Dr. Young is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. He is a Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) mentor, recently engaging in the SIR Foundation’s summer internship program.

When he is not working, Dr. Young enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters. He is an avid college football fan and enjoys spending time outdoors.
