Dr. Abbate is a Tucson native with dual appointments as a clinical assistant professor of medicine and pediatrics. He works extensively with medical students and residents and serves as associate director of the internal medicine sub-internship. He also is the founder and medical director of the Pediatric and Adolescent Gender Care Program. He enjoys caring for patients across the lifespan and emphasizes the care of medically complex young adults and gender-diverse peoples within his adult practice.

Dr. Abbate completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania and his pre-medical coursework at Columbia University, where he also held a research appointment in the Mailman School of Public Health. There, he helped to develop Columbia’s Master of Bioethics Program.

For medical school, Dr. Abbate attended the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies and received the college’s Outstanding Achievement Award. He worked to incorporate training on LGBT issues into the undergraduate medical education curriculum and advance preventive health resources for vulnerable communities.

Dr. Abbate subsequently returned to Philadelphia to complete residency internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He joined the faculty of the College of Medicine – Tucson in October 2022.
