Barry D. Weiss, MD
Dr. Weiss is a longtime member of the Family and Community Medicine faculty and is a former chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Weiss is the associate medical editor of American Family Physician, published by the American Academy of Family Physicians. He served for 17 years (2007-2024) as editor of FP Essentials, a monthly clinical monograph series published by AAFP, and for 18 years (1992-2010) as editor of Family Medicine, the national journal of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He was also series editor of McGraw-Hill’s 20 Common Problems textbooks, which included Dr. Weiss’s texts on 20 common problems in primary care and 20 common surgical problems in primary care.
Dr. Weiss has written more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals along with several books. His work has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine and a variety of other books and medical journals. He has served as a consultant to and on national committees for the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Institute of Medicine, the Joint Commission, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association. He has been the principal investigator on research, education and service grants totaling over $21 million. He chairs the department’s promotion and tenure committee.
Dr. Weiss and his wife, Joyce, are avid tandem bicyclists, hikers and backpackers. They have enjoyed these activities all around the world.
