Barry D Weiss, MD
Barry D. Weiss is a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. A longtime member of the faculty, he is also a former chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Weiss is currently medical editor of FP Essentials, the monthly monograph series published by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) that is one of AAFP's largest education programs. He is also associate medical editor of American Family Physician.
Dr. Weiss is author of more than 190 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals along with several books. He served for 18 years (1992-2010) as editor of Family Medicine, national journal of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. He was also series editor of McGraw-Hill's 20 Common Problems textbooks, which included Dr. Weiss's texts on 20 Common Problems in Primary Care and 20 Common Surgical Problems in Primary Care.
Dr. Weiss's research interests have centered on patient-physician communication, with an emphasis on health literacy. His work in this area has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and a variety of other books and medical journals. Dr Weiss has served as a consultant to and on national committees for the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Institute of Medicine, the Joint Commission, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association.
Dr. Weiss runs a writing group for the department, aimed at helping early-career faculty get their first papers published. He also chairs the department's promotion and tenure committee.
Dr. Weiss and his wife, Joyce, are avid tandem bicyclists, hikers, and backpackers. They have enjoyed these activities throughout Arizona, Alaska, and around the world.
