Chaur-Dong Hsu, MD, MPH
Dr. Hsu is board certified in general obstetrics and gynecology and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine subspecialty by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
His research has focused on innovative translational research and "Great Obstetrical Syndromes," specifically preeclampsia, preterm labor and intra-amniotic infection. His research led to postings on the Board of Directors and as an officer of the North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. In addition, Dr. Hsu is an NIH-funded investigator with more than 300 publications and abstracts. When Dr. Hsu served as the project site manager at Wayne State University for the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institutes of Health, he served as the principal investigator for the $20 million intramural fund every year for research projects.
Recently, Dr. Hsu has been focusing on translational research. Dr. Hsu collaborated with a bioengineering scientist and has an R01 grant in developing a new noninvasive endovaginal ultrasound tool. The tool is developed using photoacoustic imaging to detect uterine cervical collagen/water ratio in predicting and preventing preterm labor and birth. Also, they are developing a noninvasive photoacoustic imaging tool to detect intrapartum fetal cerebral oxygenation. This noninvasive tool is being developed to diagnose intrapartum fetal cerebral hypoxemia and to prevent neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy or cerebral palsy. Moreover, Dr. Hsu is interested in developing several mobile health apps in diabetic care, postpartum hypertension and postpartum depression. Dr. Hsu is also interested in collaborating with the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Arizona to develop a chromotherapy in labor and delivery using an innovative green light therapy as a nonpharmacological intervention to decrease anxiety and labor pain in pregnant women and postoperation pain, specifically in cases of opioid use or substance use disorder.
At the Nassau University Medical Center, SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine, Dr. Hsu was credited with developing an evidence-based bundle of interventions known as "Hsu's Bundle," which reduces C-section surgical site infections to nearly zero. The bundle was recognized by American Essential Hospital in 2014 and published in the American Journal of Infectious Control in 2016. In 2019, this bundle was implemented at the Detroit Medical Center (Tenet Health), and surgical site infections of hysterectomy were reduced to zero. It was one of the top-quality performances recognized by Tenet Health.
Dr. Hsu has been included in numerous lists of prestigious physicians, including America's TOP Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Best Doctors in America, Best Doctors and TOP Doctors in the New York Metro Area and New York Magazine.
