Board of Medical Student Loans

The Board of Medical Student Loans was created by the state of Arizona in 1978 to provide loans to Arizona medical students in return for their service as primary care or other specialty physicians in the rural and other underserved regions of the state of Arizona. The Board of Medical Student Loans operates solely to serve the legislature as mandated in ARS §15-1721 through 15-1725 and administers the Arizona Medical Student Loan Program.

Board Members

The Board of Medical Student Loans consists of nine members. Two members are appointed by the governor and are knowledgeable about health care problems in Arizona:

  • Brandon Abbott, DO
  • Jasleen Chhatwal, MD

One member is the director of the Department of Health Services, or the director’s designee:

  • Edith Di Santo, MPH

The remaining members comprise one representative from each accredited medical school in Arizona, each of whom are appointed by that medical school’s president or chief officer:

  • Irene Alexandraki, MD, PhD, MPH, University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix
  • Carlos Gonzales, MD, University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson
  • Jewel Kling, MD, Mayo Clinic, Alix School of Medicine
  • Katherine Mitzel, DO, Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine
  • Sharon J. Obadia, DO, A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona 
  • Rachel Jones, MAEd, Creighton University School of Medicine

The Board of Medical Student Loans meets publicly pursuant to ARS §38-431.02. Meetings are virtual via Microsoft Teams. Agenda and meeting link will be posted here and on the Arizona Public Meetings website.
