A research team helmed by Sarver Heart Center Associate Director Hossein Ardehali, MD, PhD, illuminates a potential path toward reversing a type of heart disease that lacks good treatments.

On May 15, 117 University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson students will receive their medical degrees at Centennial Hall.

The 27 honorees include the Department of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology and Sarver Heart Center member Marvin Slepian, MD, JD, and Purnima Madhivanan, MBBS, PhD, MPH, associate professor of public health with a dual appointment in DOM’s Division of Infectious Diseases.

Six awards were presented, but 11 physicians won honors at the annual event that culminates a year’s worth of hard work on academic research covering a range of medical challenges for Internal Medicine Residency – Tucson Program members at the U of A Department of Medicine.

Honors go to Gina Favela, Nephrology; Dawn Henderson, Cardiology; James Deljanovan, Hematology & Oncology; and Bersabe Lopez, Vice Chair of Education Office and Nephrology — with a raffle for additional prizes for others.

The Madhavan Lab offers students and postdocs valuable opportunities to engage the public and sharpen their communication skills.

With more than 50 registrants, the inaugural Sharing Opportunities & Achievements in Research forum provided an opportunity to share ideas, network, and recognize outstanding and up-and-coming investigators in the Department of Medicine.

Pulsed electric field therapy — provided by Interventional Pulmonology team including Drs. Billie Bixby, Madhav Chopra, Darius Filsoof and James Knepler — is thought to target tumors without surgery.

A University of Arizona Health Sciences study with Drs. Tara Carr and Fernando Martinez aims to understand how early-life exposure to environmental factors places some children at an increased risk for asthma.
