Research at FCM

The Department of Family and Community Medicine boasts a wide breadth of clinical, translational and community-based research centered around understanding and improving the health of our community across the lifespan. While most of our work serves populations in Tucson and southern Arizona, we are proud collaborators with universities, Tribal communities, primary care facilities, and non-government organizations (NGOs) across Arizona and the United States.

Research focus areas include, but are not limited to, issues in primary care; developing and understanding pathways to education and employment; navigating health systems; and prevention and support for various health conditions. We also collaborate closely with the department’s community engagement programs.

Our Areas of Research

FCM faculty, staff and providers engage with the community in clinical settings to treat symptoms and understand a variety of health and social issues. Issues range from clinical to translational science, all with the aim of advancing science and improving health outcomes.

FCM recognizes the path to employment and education is not linear or equally accessible to all. FCM researchers work with communities that have been inadequately depicted in higher education and the workforce to understand how existing systems may be modified into pipelines to the university, community colleges and employment.

Clinics and greater health care systems, such as insurance providers, are not intuitive to all community members, particularly if there are language barriers. FCM faculty develop strategies to overcome these barriers through strategic training for medical and community partners, as well as culturally competent programming offered at various touchpoints in a patient’s experience with the medical system.

As family medicine practitioners and researchers, we understand that a person’s mental and physical health are interconnected. Our research reflects that ethos; we incorporate a holistic approach in all avenues of research, ensuring a breadth of medical issues are addressed and solutions are community centered.

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is poking and prying with a purpose.”

—Zora Neale Hurston
