Nephrology
Research
Our division has vibrant research programs in chronic kidney disease progression, organ transplantation, renal genomics, dialysis vascular access, device development and tissue engineering. The University of Arizona Kidney Clinical Research Unit runs clinical, translational and basic research trials targeting diverse kidney problems such as chronic kidney disease, kidney transplantation, vascular access dysfunction and glomerulonephritis. Our faculty routinely publish their findings in leading nephrology journals and present at national and international meetings. While we are committed to growing our research portfolios, the most important thing we want to grow and nurture is people — our staff, faculty and fellows!
Education
Our primary clinical teaching facilities are the Banner – University Medical Center. Medical students, residents and fellows work alongside division faculty members to care for patients with acute kidney injury, glomerulonephritis, complex hypertension, bladder and kidney stones, and chronic kidney disease. Banner – University Medical Center is one of only four kidney transplant programs in Arizona and has seen a recent surge in kidney transplant activity. One of the strengths of our program is to have robust kidney-pancreas transplant program (operational since 1980s), which maintains excellent outcomes and attracts renal transplant candidates from other states. We also care for an increasing number of patients on hemodialysis and have a growing home dialysis program (both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). An important and unique strength has been our partnership with Dialysis Clinics Inc. (DCI) to create a nocturnal hemodialysis program. An important focus of the division is on mentorship. We recognize that our greatest strength is our faculty and fellows.
