Neurology
Memory Disorders
Our mission is to improve the lives of individuals affected by cognitive decline, dementia and related neurodegenerative diseases through cutting-edge research and excellence in education.
Research
The Division of Memory Disorders is part of a vibrant research ecosystem that spans clinical, translational and basic science investigations in aging and neurodegenerative disease. Faculty members are principal investigators on studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium and other major funding agencies. Areas of active research include early detection of Alzheimer’s disease using biomarkers and imaging, the development of disease-modifying therapies, and the exploration of brain aging through cellular, molecular and systems neuroscience.
Through the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and the University of Arizona Center for Innovation in Brain Science, our team contributes to high-impact clinical trials and observational studies focused on disease prevention, novel therapeutics and understanding sex differences in neurodegeneration. The program emphasizes translational research, including preclinical studies of cognitive aging, neuroinflammation and regenerative approaches to brain health.
We also engage in community-based research and public health initiatives aimed at reducing disparities in dementia diagnosis and care, particularly among underserved populations in Arizona.
Education
Our division provides educational opportunities across all levels of training, from medical students and residents to postdoctoral researchers and faculty. Neurology residents rotate through our memory and cognitive disorders clinics, gaining experience in the assessment and management of dementia, mild cognitive impairment and complex neurobehavioral syndromes. Faculty provide didactic sessions on neurodegenerative disease, neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging and interdisciplinary care models.
Our section also supports trainees pursuing research in neuroscience, neuropsychology and geriatric neurology, offering mentorship and collaborative opportunities within the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and University of Arizona research community. We participate in public education efforts and professional training programs to improve awareness, diagnosis and care of memory disorders statewide.
Through a commitment to clinical excellence, scientific discovery and workforce development, the division serves as a regional leader in advancing brain health and dementia care.
