Neurocritical Care

Our faculty are committed to advancing the science of neurocritical care by investigating mechanisms of brain injury and recovery, developing novel therapeutic approaches, and optimizing ICU systems and protocols. We prepare the next generation of neurologists, intensivists and clinician-scientists to lead in the evolving landscape of critical care neurology.

Research

Faculty in the Division of Neurocritical Care are actively engaged in clinical, translational and health services research that seeks to improve the care of critically ill neurological patients. Areas of focus include acute brain edema, neuroprotection, cerebral autoregulation, prognostication after brain injury, and systems-based approaches to improve outcomes in stroke and other types of brain injury. Our team participates in national and international clinical trials exploring innovative therapies for stroke, intracranial hemorrhage and neuroprotection. We are committed to fostering a culture of inquiry and discovery, with a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary collaboration and bedside-to-bench research that directly informs clinical care.

Education

Education is a core priority of the Division of Neurocritical Care. We provide a robust training experience for medical students, residents and fellows that emphasizes critical thinking, diagnostic precision and procedural competency in the care of neurologically complex ICU patients. Neurology residents gain hands-on experience managing acute neurologic emergencies, interpreting advanced neurodiagnostics and leading interdisciplinary rounds. Trainees also learn principles of ICU systems management, end-of-life care and ethical decision-making in the setting of severe neurologic injury. We actively mentor future clinician-educators and researchers, offering structured opportunities in neurocritical care education, quality improvement and clinical trial participation. Our goal is to cultivate skilled, compassionate and academically driven neurointensivists equipped for leadership in academic medicine and beyond.
