Presenter
Dr. Sumit Mohan is a professor of medicine and epidemiology, as well as the medical director of the kidney transplant program, at Columbia University. Dr. Mohan’s clinical and research career has focused on reducing health disparities and improving outcomes for patients with kidney disease. His research findings include the first descriptions of weekend discards, unilateral discards, and out-of-sequence organ placements, along with contributions to understanding the role of APOL1 – a protein involved in both kidney disease and defense against parasites – in kidney transplantation. He has received awards from the National Kidney Foundation, American Society of Transplantation, and American Society of Nephrology for his groundbreaking work on organ evaluation, utilization, organ discards and, most recently, out-of-sequence allocation. His work has informed several transplantation-related federal policies, including the White House Executive Order aimed at minimizing organ discards. His work has been widely cited by the National Academy of Sciences in their recent report on transplantation, as well as being featured in the New York Times, The Economist, Freakonomics, USA Today, CBS News, and NPR affiliates, among others.
