Three General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine faculty papers written by Joy Bulger Beck, MD, Mindy Fain, MD, and Anna Morenz, MD, MPH, and published in 2026 generated media coverage and pickups to broaden the impact of their findings.

Through posing questions and providing care, a Tucson native brings patient outcomes, public interest and policy into focus.

With a twist in how poster awardees were reviewed, the event showcased interdepartmental collaboration that delved into “health disparities and challenges faced by underserved communities, highlighting a strong commitment to socially relevant research.”

The annual College of Medicine – Tucson research showcase features Nobel laureate William Kaelin Jr., MD, U of A Provost Patricia Prelock, PhD, and a successful poster session as well as multiple Department of Medicine faculty presenters and participants.

Among honorees are the Division of Cardiology’s Tonya Carney and Dawn Henderson, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine’s Jacqueline Carrillo, and the Division of Infectious Diseases’ Melody Ayon. Each had a few words to share.

Research using advanced imaging could improve future cancer risk assessment and prevention strategies, according to findings in a recently published study on which the U of A’s Richard Blew was first author and Jennifer Bea, PhD, was senior author.

From invited lectures to groundbreaking studies, the U of A physician-scientist Franz Rischard, DO, MSc, is advancing care for a complex, often deadly disease, making his case via published papers and invited speakerships from Ireland to Yale to Portugal.

The college will establish the Gulshan Sethi, MD, Endowed Professorship in Cardiothoracic Surgery through $1 million in gifts and commitments from a group of donors.

The U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools report ranked College of Medicine – Tucson tier 2 for primary care and medical research, and also scored us well in graduates practicing in underserved and rural areas.
