Alec Anderson, MD

Resident

Where are you from?

I am originally from Sauk Prairie, a small town outside of Madison, Wisconsin.

Why did you choose U of A family medicine?

I chose U of A family medicine because it offers unmatched opportunities to explore the variety of my professional interests, all while living in an exciting city that lends itself well to so many of my hobbies outside of medicine. One of the opportunities within U of A family medicine that stands out is the ability to work with and alongside diverse populations, and I am excited to take part in the Spanish language distinction track to continue developing my medical Spanish, as well as the global health distinction track to expand my learning abroad.

What are you most excited about for life in Tucson?

After living in Wisconsin my entire life, I am excited to explore a new part of the country and set down roots in Tucson. As an outdoor enthusiast, I am looking forward to exploring hiking trails, nearby national and state parks, and seeking out new bird species (my No. 1 hobby). I am equally excited to explore the culture, food and other unique experiences that Tucson has to offer.

What are your interests or hobbies outside of medicine?

My favorite hobby outside of medicine is birding, and I feel so lucky to complete residency in Tucson, which offers some of the most diverse birding opportunities in the United States. I also enjoy hiking, backpacking, road trips and traveling abroad. I am a passionate sports fan, and despite now living in Arizona, I will continue cheering on my Packers, Bucks and Brewers from afar.

What are your professional interests within medicine?

One of the challenges I have found in my pursuit of medicine is being able to narrow down my professional interests, which is why I feel family medicine has always been the ideal match. A few of my areas of interest include global health, medical Spanish, addiction medicine, chronic disease management and motivational interviewing.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?

My ideal day off includes a stop at a local coffee shop, getting outside to hike or birdwatch, and having dinner outside on the patio with my wife.

What is the top item on your bucket list?

To one day take an Antarctic cruise.
