Chad McWhinnie, PhD

Assistant Clinical Professor, Psychiatry

Dr. McWhinnie is a staff psychologist at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic at Banner-University Medical Center South.

His therapeutic work is focused on adolescents struggling with multiple problems, including challenges related to substance use; mood and anxiety; suicidality; self-injurious behavior; trauma; and behavioral issues at home and school.

Dr. McWhinnie uses an evidence-based approach with expertise in cognitive behavioral therapies. He has extensive training and practice in family-based interventions, mindfulness-based interventions for behavior change, motivational interviewing and dialectical behavioral therapy. His approach to treatment is pragmatic and contextual, and he gives important consideration to family, school and social issues.

Prior to joining the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, Dr. McWhinnie worked from 2012 to 2017 with adolescents and their families as a staff psychologist at the Adolescent Acute Residential Treatment Program at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, and was a faculty member of Harvard Medical School.
