Courtney Andersen, DO
Where are you from? Sylvania, Ohio.
Why did you choose the College of Medicine – Tucson Pediatrics Residency Program? I loved my interview day here. It was my favorite by a long shot. A medium-sized program with a strong sense of community was what I wanted in a residency program, and even virtually I could feel the supportive, familylike atmosphere, and I knew this was where I wanted to be. Beyond that, I had thought about moving to Arizona since I first started coming here on vacations with my family in high school. Residency was the perfect time for me to take that leap and move across the country. And I could not be happier that I did.
What are your current professional interests and career goals? Pediatric Intensive care
What are your personal interests and hobbies? Hiking, barre, pickleball, rollerblading — really anything I can do outside — and reading on my couch or by the pool.
What is your favorite thing about Tucson? The daily sunshine, the mountain views and access to all things outdoors. The desert climate and landscape are so uniquely beautiful — whether I am out hiking or appreciating the mountains from the windows of the hospital, it always brings me joy. My friends from home often tell me I live in paradise, and I have to say I agree. Also our sunsets are unbeatable.
What are your nonmedical goals during residency? Visit at least one national park each year I am here (it is on my bucket list to visit all 63). On my road trip from Ohio to Arizona, I stopped at White Sands National Park. During intern year, I spent a lot of time exploring Saguaro National Park, which is conveniently located right here in Tucson, and during my second year, I took a trip to Acadia National Park in Maine. During my third year, I didn't get to visit a national park, but I took a road trip through the Navajo Nation, stopping at lots of national monuments and driving through Monument Valley. We will see where I adventure during my chief resident year. I am hoping Joshua Tree and Petrified Forest national parks.
