Desiree Justus, DO
Where are you from?
I’ve spent my whole life exploring the Grand Canyon state! I was raised in Phoenix and Surprise, spent my adult years in Western Arizona and most recently settled in Bellemont. Living just outside of Flagstaff was the perfect spot for me while I finished my medical school rotations in Northern Arizona. I love this state and am so excited to continue practicing here.
Why did you choose U of A family medicine?
There are so many reasons why I chose this program! My primary goal is to practice full-spectrum family medicine, and this program offers the robust training I need to achieve that, especially through the rural and medical Spanish tracks. After being inspired by two incredible mentors in Northern Arizona (both proud alumni of this program), I knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps. On a personal note, I love Arizona! Having my family nearby and staying close to my husband, who serves with the Phoenix Fire Department, provides me with the strong support system I need to thrive during residency.
What are you most excited about for life in Tucson?
I am so excited to dive into the Tucson food scene! My husband and I are big foodies and can’t wait to explore all the local spots. We’re also looking forward to the adventure side of Tucson, whether it’s hitting the plethora of hiking trails or taking scenic day trips to explore more of Southern Arizona when we have a free weekend.
What are your interests or hobbies outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, my favorite way to recharge is spending time with my family and our two dogs, Stitch and Penny. We’re an active group. You can usually find us on the soccer or volleyball court, but we also love teaming up for online video games. When I’m looking for a quieter afternoon, I’m usually gardening or curled up with a good book.
What are your professional interests within medicine?
I am most passionate about full-spectrum family medicine, including obstetrics and hospital medicine. Throughout residency, I plan to hone my skills in clinical procedures to better serve my community. I also have a strong interest in women's health and integrative medicine, focusing on a holistic approach to disease management that looks beyond just pharmaceuticals to treat the whole person.
What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
A perfect day off for me, especially after a busy work week, involves family, food and fur babies! My husband and I love to spend our free time at home, cooking a comforting meal together and playing with our two dogs.
What is the top item on your bucket list?
I’d love to visit every national park with my family. I am excited to cross off Saguaro National Park now that we’ll be in Tucson.
