Jessica Ashley Black, DO

PGY-4 Chief Resident, Pediatrics

Where are you from? Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Why did you choose the College of Medicine – Tucson Pediatrics Residency Program? I chose this program because it truly checked all the boxes for me — location, training and, most importantly, the people. Tucson is a special place. I have family here, which was a huge factor in my decision, and I love everything the Southwest has to offer — stunning sunsets, mountain views and easy access to outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming and even skiing (yes, there’s snow nearby!). It’s the perfect balance of adventure and comfort. From a training perspective, I was drawn to the medium-sized program with strong academic roots and broad exposure to subspecialties. I appreciated that there aren’t a large number of fellows, which means more hands-on learning and direct teaching from attendings. The academic hospital setting also ensures a diverse and rich clinical experience. But what really sealed the deal was the feel of the program. When I visited Tucson and met with one of the chief residents, I immediately sensed the close-knit, supportive community. The residents were warm and down-to-earth, and genuinely cared about each other — exactly the kind of environment I wanted for three years of intense training. Being surrounded by like-minded, compassionate people makes all the difference. This program felt like home from the start, and I’m so grateful to be part of it.

What are your current professional interests and career goals? Pediatric gastroenterology and medical education.

What are your personal interests and hobbies? I love traveling, being on the water, and spending time with my husband and daughter. I’m always up for a good board game, trying new restaurants or cooking something new. I also enjoy playing sports like soccer, volleyball and pickleball just for fun!

What is your favorite thing about Tucson? My favorite thing about Tucson is its natural beauty — the mountains, sunsets and amazing weather most of the year make it perfect for outdoor walks and pool time. The people here are laid-back, outdoorsy and kind. Plus, it’s close to bigger cities like Phoenix and San Diego for concerts or beach trips, and even skiing in Mount Lemmon or Flagstaff!

What are your non-medical goals during residency? During residency, I want to prioritize quality time with my husband, daughter and nearby family. I also plan to make the most of my time off by traveling to visit loved ones and explore new places — keeping life outside of medicine full and meaningful!
