Dr. Bates is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson and is the current Program Director of the South Campus Emergency Medicine Residency.  

She has experience in both community and academic emergency medicine, having previously served as Emergency Department Chair at St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson. Within residency education, she has developed innovative curricula with a focus on improving resident academic and clinical performance as well as resident wellbeing.  

Dr. Bates has been recognized with multiple leadership, teaching, and clinical excellence awards and has published and presented nationally on medical education and emergency medicine.

Research Interests

Resident medical education, clinical translation of evidenced-based medicine, rural and border health, social determinants of health, and physician
