Dr. Karin Halvorson relocated to Tucson in November 2024 from Hawaii, where she had been a pulmonary, critical care and emergency medicine attending physician with Pacific Permanente Group, an affiliate of Kaiser Permanente Health, at the Maui Memorial Medical Center. Here in Tucson, she is a staff physician in the Southern Arizona Veterans Affairs Health Care System, known as SAVAHCS. In April 2025, she was named chief of the Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine Division at SAVAHCS. An active swimmer throughout her life, she served as head water polo coach and assistant swimming and diving coach at St. Paul, Minnesota’s Macalester College, winning numerous awards in the 1990s and 2000s and earning her induction later into the Macalester Athletics Hall of Fame. She is invested in medical education having been on faculty at Tulane University for several years. She serves as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. And she is creator of the University of Arizona’s Critical Care Hub, which includes an ICU Handbook for Housestaff, a Fellow’s Corner for additional resources, and various didactics: azcriticalcare.org
