Learning Objectives
- Explain the pharmacology, regulatory status, and major clinical risks of selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS).
- Recognize muscle dysmorphia as a form of body dysmorphic disorder and identify how appearance-driven psychopathology can initiate and perpetuate performance enhancing drug use.
- Apply a substance use disorder framework to problematic AAS use, including intoxication effects, withdrawal, endocrine suppression, and relapse drivers.
- Construct a practical, nonjudgmental assessment and treatment plan that integrates addiction care, psychiatric treatment, medical risk reduction, and endocrine follow-up.
The educational objective of the Addiction Medicine Grand Rounds is to provide health professionals with updates on addiction topics, with the goals of increasing knowledge, competence and patient care. The Addiction Medicine Lecture series is held monthly on a Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.
