In Memoriam: Arthur Gmitro, PhD

We are deeply saddened to share that our friend and colleague, Professor Emeritus Arthur “Art” Gmitro, PhD, passed away on November 22 in Tucson.

Dr. Gmitro devoted more than four decades to the University of Arizona, leaving an extraordinary mark on our Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, the College of Optical Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he served as professor emeritus and department head prior to his retirement in 2024. His scholarship and leadership helped shape the direction of our field, consistently inspiring new ideas and higher standards.

Dr. Gmitro was especially pivotal in advancing magnetic resonance imaging at the University of Arizona. He brought creativity, rigor and technical sophistication to the use of MRI — not only in research but also in clinical care. His influence is woven into the way we think about imaging, the tools we rely on and the spirit of innovation that continues to define our work. Across generations of faculty, staff and trainees, he was a steady force for progress and excellence.

Beyond his professional impact, Dr. Gmitro was a genuinely kind and generous person. He had an infectious enthusiasm for life, a deep care for others, and a gift for making people feel supported and valued. His presence enriched our community, and his absence will be felt profoundly.

Our thoughts are with Dr. Gmitro’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. A celebration of life honoring Dr. Gmitro will be held on February 21.
