The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson’s 2025 Clinical Trials Development Workshop convened June 25 at the HSIB Forum of the Health Sciences Innovation Building amid a powerful coalition of research leaders and investigators from Banner Health, the university’s medical schools in Phoenix and Tucson, and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System.
Funded through the Arizona Biomedical Research Centre grant, this annual event — which stretches back to at least 2019 — exemplifies ABRC’s mission to advance research, innovation and collaboration across Arizona’s biomedical institutions. The workshop served as a vital platform for fostering cross-institutional partnerships and accelerating clinical research excellence statewide, said Franz Rischard, DO, principal investigator on the ABRC grant and event co-leader with Jarrod Mosier, MD, vice chair of research in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Mosier is a professor in that department as well as the Department of Medicine where he’s associate program director for the Critical Care Medicine Track of the Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.
That fellowship is based in the DOM’s Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, where Dr. Rischard is a professor of medicine and director of the Adult Pulmonary Hypertension Program. In addition, Dr. Rischard is the interim associate dean of research at the College of Medicine – Tucson. Dr. Mosier also serves as medical director for the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) life support program at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson.
The workshop was designed to educate and empower both emerging and established principal investigators, or PIs, Dr. Rischard added. The morning sessions focused on foundational knowledge for new investigators, including an overview of clinical trial operations, study design, grant writing and navigating institutional processes.

Attendees gained valuable insights into resources available through the U of A Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) and the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) programs. Speakers included CTSI Director Sally Radovick, MD, and Maria Gordon, MS, senior clinical research manager of the Clinical & Translational Sciences (CATS) Research Center.
A dynamic “Rapid Fire” panel, led by Drs. Rischard and Mosier, and breakout discussions allowed for real-time engagement, with significant audience participation and positive feedback throughout the day. The afternoon shifted toward mentorship and leadership development, offering senior investigators a platform to discuss research culture, scholarship and career development.

An afternoon panel discussion with Sairam Parthasarathy, MD, PACCS division chief and Center for Sleep, Circadian & Neuroscience Research director; Corey Casper, MD, MPH, new chief research officer for Banner Research and a professor in the DOM’s Division of Infectious Diseases; Justin Starren, MD, PhD, radiology professor and Center for Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics director; and Kenneth Liechty, MD, Pediatric Surgery Division chief, continued several lines of discussion ongoing during the day. That was particularly true regarding Drs. Casper, Starren, Mosier and Rischard as well as SAVAHCS interim associate chief of staff for R&D and cardiologist Sandesh Dev, MD, also a DOM associate professor, on opening up better opportunities for collaboration with Banner Research.

Among other DOM attendees were Tushar Acharya, MD, MPH, Division of Cardiology associate professor and member, American Heart Association’s Diabetes Committee of the Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health; Heidi Erickson, RN, PACCS pulmonary research manager; Michael Insel, MD, PACCS assistant professor and PCCM/CCM fellowship associate program director; and Anna Morenz, MD, MPH, assistant professor, Division of General Internal Medicine, Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine, and member Cancer Prevention and Control Program, U of A Cancer Center.
Networking opportunities, including breakout lunches and mentorship round-tables, fostered cross-campus collaboration and inspired new research initiatives. The workshop successfully met its goal of enhancing clinical trial literacy and leadership among investigators, reinforcing a shared commitment to innovation and excellence in research, Drs. Rischard and Mosier added.
Next year’s Clinical Trials Development Workshop is scheduled to be hosted by the College of Medicine – Phoenix to enhance collaboration between the two colleges, Dr. Rischard concluded.
