Pediatric Radiology
Academic Leadership and Innovation in Pediatric Imaging
Residents, fellows and medical students work with faculty from the Division of Pediatric Radiology for hands-on training at Diamond Children’s Center, which is dedicated to delivering exceptional, child-centered imaging care.
Trainees learn to provide accurate, thorough and timely imaging while minimizing radiation exposure through adherence to the Image Gently® Campaign and advanced, low-dose protocols. Using state-of-the-art equipment — including dual-source CT and MRI systems with built-in entertainment — our graduates are prepared to provide high-quality diagnostics and a comforting experience for young patients. Our clinical partners at Banner – University Medicine were the first and only group in the region to use MRI routinely for diagnosing appendicitis in children, significantly reducing unnecessary testing and treatment delays.
Residents, Fellows and Medical Students Benefit From
- State-of-the-art imaging technology: pediatric-optimized MRI and CT systems with low-dose protocols and advanced fetal imaging capabilities
- Collaborative pediatric care: hands-on experience working with child life specialists and multidisciplinary teams to support children and families throughout imaging
- Expert subspecialty mentorship: training with leaders in pediatric neuroradiology, congenital cardiac imaging, fetal MRI and pediatric interventional radiology
Under the mentorship of distinguished subspecialists in a highly collaborative clinical environment, trainees will learn to provide the highest standards of care and diagnostic insight for pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence.
- Child-Focused Approach: Trainees will provide care using equipment and facilities that are specifically designed to maximize comfort and reduce the need for sedation in young patients. For example, MR-compatible movie screens and entertainment systems help create a relaxing experience during scans.
- Collaborative Care: Trainees and clinicians will work alongside child life specialists to support children before, during and after procedures.
- Clinical Expertise: Trainees benefit from mentorship from subspecialty-certified radiologists who offer advanced care in pediatric neuroradiology, congenital cardiac imaging, fetal MRI and pediatric interventional radiology.
Equipment
- CT: Dual-source Siemens Somatom Definition Flash CT scanner enables rapid imaging with reduced dose — independent of patient movement or breath-holding ability.
- MRI: Three state-of-the-art 1.5T and 3.0T MRI systems offer shorter scan times and built-in entertainment to ease anxiety and improve comfort.
Other highlights
- Comprehensive Services: Full-spectrum imaging includes MRI, MR spectroscopy, CT, 3D imaging, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, fetal imaging, nuclear medicine PET/CT, radiography and more.
- Radiation Safety and Accreditation: In alignment with the Image Gently® Campaign, our faculty and clinical partners follow dose-reduction protocols and educational outreach. CT services are accredited by the American College of Radiology — among few in Arizona to achieve this distinction.
